The most privileged view is from the water, with the yacht anchored in the caldera looking up at the white clifftop villages as the light fades. Oia’s castle terrace is the classic on-land vantage point but draws large crowds in high season. From the yacht, the same light and colour hits the caldera walls and the village facades without the crowd. A glass of Assyrtiko on deck as the sun drops behind the volcanic ridge is hard to improve on.

Santorini’s volcanic soil produces Assyrtiko, a dry white wine with high acidity and a mineral character that pairs naturally with seafood. It is one of the most distinctive wines in Greece. The wineries of Santo Wines and Domaine Sigalas are the most visited; both sit on the caldera rim with views across the water and can be reached by tender and a short taxi ride. Worth buying a few bottles to take back on board.

Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age city buried by the volcanic eruption that formed the caldera, often called the “Pompeii of the Aegean.” The excavation is well preserved and covered, making it manageable even in summer heat. It sits on the south coast of the island, close to Red Beach, making it a practical combined shore excursion. For guests with an interest in ancient history, it is one of the most remarkable sites in the Greek islands.

Paros is roughly 40 nautical miles north of Santorini, about an hour and a half to two hours by motor yacht. Mykonos is approximately 60 nautical miles, a comfortable three-hour passage in settled conditions. Santorini naturally serves as the southern anchor of a Cyclades charter, with most itineraries working either north to south or south to north over the course of a week.

The most scenic are the volcanic beaches on the south coast: Red Beach near Akrotiri has dramatic red and black cliffs directly above the water, and Perissa and Perivolos are long black-sand beaches with good tavernas and beach bars. These are best reached by yacht rather than by road, which avoids the traffic and bus queues. Baxedes on the north coast is quieter and less visited.
