Most charter yachts in the Athens area use Marina Zea or Marina Alimos (Flisvos) in Piraeus, both well equipped and a short taxi ride from the city centre. Flisvos is the more modern of the two and popular with larger yachts. Lavrio, about 50km southeast of Athens, is increasingly used as a departure point for charters heading directly into the Cyclades.

Yes, and the perspective from the water as you approach Piraeus, with the Acropolis visible above the city, is one of the more striking arrivals in the Mediterranean. A morning visit on foot is manageable in two to three hours. Book tickets in advance in summer; the site fills quickly and the heat at midday is intense. Early morning entry is significantly more pleasant.

The Kolonaki neighbourhood is the most polished option for upscale dining, with a concentration of contemporary Greek restaurants and wine bars. Vouliagmeni, on the coast south of the city, is more convenient for charter guests and has several good seafood restaurants directly on the water. For fresh fish at the source, the tavernas around the old fishing harbour of Mikrolimano in Piraeus are a local favourite and within easy reach of the marinas.

Cape Sounion sits at the southern tip of Attica, about 70km from Athens by road and easily reachable by yacht. The Temple of Poseidon stands on the clifftop above the sea and is one of the most dramatic ancient sites in Greece, particularly at sunset. Many charters departing from Athens pass Sounion on their way south toward the Cyclades, treating it as a natural first stop.

The Saronic Gulf islands are the closest. Aegina is about 16 nautical miles from Piraeus, Hydra about 35, and Spetses about 50. All three can be visited in the first days of a charter without a long passage. Hydra, which bans motor vehicles, is the most atmospheric and a particular favourite for guests who want a quiet, picturesque introduction to Greek island life before heading further into the Cyclades.
