Capri sandals: a generational summer must-wear
It was the imagination of Capri’s artisans that turned the typical sandals made on the island into a true fashion icon that at summertime can be spotted anywhere on the streets of the island. These unique shoes are based on a model the Emperor Tiberius wore in the last years of his life when he relocated to Capri and would put on a pair of hard-sole sandals with leather strips wrapped around the ankles. Since that time, the design has taken on ever more original and extravagant shapes, but always preserving the original manufacture of two strips of leather that are sewn together to make the sole. The narrow laces can instead be decorated with applications and jewels.
Costanzo Ruocco is the first name that comes to mind when talking about the sandals. One of Capri’s most important artists-artisans, Ruocco has recently appeared in a publication by Maison Fendi that describes him as a fashion genius. His shoemaking ability won the heart of icons the likes of Clark Gable, Sophia Loren, Jackie Onassis and Brigitte Bardot, only some of the many personalities that in the 1960s went to his atelier in Capri in search of the perfect sandal.
La Campanina, Capri’s historical jewelry shop
La Campanina is an old jewelry shop in Capri that sells gems shining with the light of a glorious and glamorous past. The shop’s name recalls Saint Michael’s small bells (campanelle in Italian) that during the Second World War the American soldiers sent home as lucky charms. Capri’s inhabitants sent one of these bells to the American President. It was displayed in Washington and tinkled when the Allied Forces won the war.
Today the third generation of jewelry-makers manages the shop, preserving the exclusive heritage that has for a long time inspired the creation of wonderful jewels for the international clientele.
