LYBRA LAUNCHES THE SUPERYACHT SHOW
Yacht companies from around the globe will descend on Barcelona this spring for the yacht show season. As befits the city’s growing importance as a centre of the industry, the Large Yacht Brokers Association (LYBRA) has recently announced that Barcelona’s OneOcean Port Vell will be the location for its inaugural The Superyacht Show, to be held from May 2nd to 5th 2018.
A New Addition to the Yacht Show Calendar
The start of the Mediterranean yachting season is a busy affair, with long-standing yacht shows such as the Palma International Boat Show – this year celebrating its 35th edition and running from April 27th to May 1st – already a well established fixture on the yachting calendar. This new addition is well timed to coincide with the conclusion of another industry stalwart: the MYBA Charter Show, now in its 29th year – and second in OneOcean Port Vell. This year it runs from April 23rd to 26th. In fact, many of the LYBRA members will already have a company presence in the bustling Catalonian capital and MYBA have already confirmed that it will leave much of the show infrastructure for this new event to draw upon.
A Yacht Sales and Charter Show with a Client Focus
Unlike the MYBA Show, an industry-only event that promotes yachts for charter over the coming season, The Superyacht Show has been conceived to focus on the client in both a sales and charter context. In a press release to announce the establishment of The Superyacht Show, LYBRA President Jonathan Beckett commented: “The idea of a client-focused show was put forward several years ago and we’ve been working on the details for quite some time.” While Beckett, who is also the CEO of yacht company Burgess, admits that it has rather relaxed expectations for the inaugural addition, he adds that the long-term ambition is: “to develop the show into the definitive, pre-summer buying opportunity in the Mediterranean.”
Each LYBRA member will have seven berths to showcase yachts for both sale and charter. Motor yachts, sailing yachts, explorer yachts, and classic yachts – there is no restriction on the style of superyacht on display. Organisers have promised that the atmosphere of the show will be fresh and luxurious, to truly reflect the exclusive experience that is yacht ownership and chartering. In addition to the yachts and yacht company exhibitors, a carefully curated onshore display will showcase some of the world’s most prestigious lifestyle brands and products.
LYBRA Explained
Founded in 2012, LYBRA is a trade association for superyacht brokerages that have a fleet of Central Agency yachts 30m or longer. Currently, the association counts nine members: Burgess, Camper & Nicholsons International, Edmiston & Company, Fraser, IYC, Merle Wood & Associates, Northrop & Johnson, Ocean Independence and YACHTZOO.
Barcelona: The New Yachting Hub
The announcement that Barcelona has been chosen to host this new show is yet further proof of the growing importance of the Catalan capital in the yachting scene. OneOcean Port Vell is a world class marina in the heart of the city, one of the only marinas in the world with the capacity to berth yachts up to 190m LOA. A city with a vibrant culture and proud heritage, Barcelona is a wonderful city to start a Mediterranean yacht charter in, especially considering its position as a gateway to the Balearics.
