The glitzy Riviera city of Cannes is one of the great yachting hotspots of Europe. With some spectacular events being held throughout the month of September, including the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Cannes Royale Regatta, the glamorous destination proved its worth within the international yachting community and enhanced the appeal of a Cannes yacht charter.

The Cannes Yachting Festival 2017

The excitement kicked off with the Cannes Yachting Festival 2017 between the 12th and 17th of September, which opened the prestigious Mediterranean boat show season. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2017, the Cannes yacht show is the largest in-water boat show in Europe, with over 600 vessels on display, including superyachts, sailing yachts and tenders.

For yachting enthusiast, the Cannes Yachting Festival delivered 6 days of yacht premieres and product launches, glamorous events and luxury shopping. As well as exhibiting some of the most iconic superyachts afloat, the Cannes show is feted for its yacht launches, with over 100 global and European premieres of new vessels by the world’s leading shipyards, as well as the unveiling of cutting-edge marine technology and exciting new watertoys. There was an action-packed schedule of events, including the much-loved ‘Concorde d’Elegance’ competition, in which a procession of beautiful day boats paraded past spectators and judges at the show’s private beach club.

Of course, where there are superyachts, there will always be luxury brands, and the Cannes Yachting Festival celebrated this natural symbiosis with the return of The Luxury Gallery – a shopping promenade at the Palais des Festivals which featured some of the world’s most celebrated luxury lifestyle, fashion, and jewellery brands. For those with an interest in supercars, there was a Maserati loungewhich displayed the latest model.

Many prospective yacht owners and charterers took tours on exhibiting yachts, and some even enjoyed the rare opportunity to take new yacht models out on sea trials. In 2017, sponsored by Sunseeker, the RAF Red Arrows made a special appearance overhead, painting the sky red, white and blue to the delight of the show’s visitors.

The Cannes Royale Regatta 2017

Six days after the close of the Cannes Yachting Festival begins the Cannes Royale Regatta, which runs from the 23rd to the 30th of September and brings a large fleet of the world’s most beautiful classic sailing yachts together to compete for the coveted Panerai Trophy.

Given the disparate ages and sizes of the classic fleet, the Cannes regatta is split into numerous classes, including the Classic, Metrique, Tofinou, Dragon, Spirit of Tradition, and 5.5m yacht classes. The sight of the gaff-rigged wooden yachts spread out across the Bay of Cannes is one of the most spectacular sights in the yachting world, and a sensational event for spectators during a Cannes yacht charter.

Cannes has been hosting sailing regattas since 1859, with a proud history of royal participation by European kings and princes, lending this regatta a superb history and sense of occasion. As the last regatta in the Panerai Mediterranean circuit, the regatta is much-loved by the participating yacht owners and crews, with a festive spirit and good-natured rivalries dominating the event.

Given the close timing of the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Cannes Royal Regatta, it is very possible to book a Cannes yacht charter that takes in the excitement of both September events. As always, the Mediterranean city of Cannes makes for an ideal yacht charter destination, with Michelin-star restaurants, glamorous beach clubs, world-class boutiques, and a glittering nightlife of casinos and super-clubs.
